Recurrent Pattern Detection™ technology

Commtouch's Recurrent Pattern Detection™ (RPD) technology is a service "in the cloud" and differs dramatically from traditional spam filtering.  Traditional filters evaluate individual messages, assigning scores based on thousands of rules.  Examples include whether the subject includes “Your family” or a derivative of “levitra,” the body includes the phrase “c0mpany” or an excessive number of blank lines, or a URL links to an IP address directly.  This is one reason why spam filters require significant tuning for each language and why spammers have enjoyed temporary success with image based and PDF spam. Each new technique requires time for security providers to develop an appropriate filter.

In contrast, Commtouch’s RPD technology analyzes large volumes of Internet traffic in real-time. New spam outbreaks are identified as soon as they emerge and recorded in the Commtouch Detection Center. On the Untangle Server, Commtouch Spam Booster then queries the Commtouch Detection Center and receives message classification in real-time.
